| Henderson
Travel Service, the first fully appointed, African American
owned travel agency in the U.S., first opened its doors in Atlanta, GA
in 1955. Before commercial airlines were flying to Africa, Freddye
and Jake Henderson chartered an aircraft to take the first group of American
tourists to Ghana to celebrate its independence in 1957. As a result
of their continuing legacy of African Tourism, they and Henderson Travel
Service have received numerous awards from various heads of state of African
countries, African travel associations and organizations, etc. over the
last five decades. |
| Henderson
Travel Service has a long and distinguished history in African
travel and tourism. The pioneering trip to Ghana’s Independence Celebration
was the catalyst for what has now become a multi-faceted company involved
in heritage tourism and tourism development projects throughout the African
diaspora. The 1957 Tour to Ghana was the beginning of our commitment
to promoting travel to Africa, for which we have won numerous distinctions
and awards over the years from various heads of state of African countries
and travel industry associations and organizations. For example,
HTS received the Africa Trophy, a prestigious award for excellence in the
promotion of tourism to Africa. Additionally, Ms. Freddye S. Henderson,
founder of Henderson Travel Service, also received the Rosenbluth Memorial
Award, ASTA's highest recognition of competence in the travel industry. |
