Your journey in Mali begins with
a day in Bamako, the capital. A city tour takes you to mosques, markets,
monuments, and the museum. The River Niger runs through the heart of the
city. Soon you will follow the river north to Segou, famous for its carpets
and textiles. You have entered an ancient land - a land of empires born
and vanished. |
 |
| The river is the lifeblood of
Mali, wending its way to Mopti, the center of Mali's magic and mystery.
Here are the crossroads of the Fulani, Bambara, Tuareg, Dogon and Peul
cultures. |

Mopti is a friendly town where
a busy port receives salt from the north and dispatches boats up and down
the river. An afternoon in a pirogue takes you to an island of Bozo fishermen,
returning in time for the sunset. You travel south to ancient Djenne to
see the market day activities and the Grande Mosque. From Mopti, your journey
continues into the land of the Dogon. Here you will see the fantastic architecture
of this pastoral people. Scholars believe they might be descendants of
old Egyptian priest cults. The Dogon are very spiritual - known for their
ceremonies and mask dances. |
| A tour option will take you north
to the legendary city of Timbuktu ... where ancient universities once educated
the elite of Islam. See ancient mosques that date from the 7th century.
Wandering the streets and alleys, you discover an old world of carved doorways
and the homes of long-dead explorers from Europe. This is the realm of
the Tuareg, the nomads of the desert. Join them for a camel ride to one
of their camps. And take time to examine the weapons and jewelry made by
Tuareg silversmiths. All too soon you'll be back in Bamako - shopping
for those last minute souvenirs! |
