Senegal is still the easiest country
to visit in West Africa. Just 6½ hours by air from New York, Dakar
(the capital) hugs the Atlantic coast and is blessed with sandy beaches
and a mild climate the year round. Your first day in Africa is Sunday -
a time to relax by the hotel pool or bargain with some of the local artisans
for crafts and souvenirs. |
 |
You start your trip with a City
Tour of Dakar - Independence Square, the IFAN Museum, the markets of Kermel
& Sandaga and the Presidential Palace. As the days go by, you will
meet the many cultures of Senegal: the Wolof, Mandingo, Serere, Fulani,
Diola and the Lolou. |

For many, the excursion to Goreé
Island is an emotional moment. The Slave House is where captives spent
their final hours. They entered the "Door of No Return" to board waiting
ships bound for the plantations of the Caribbean, North America and Brazil. |
 |
| During your stay, you will have
opportunities to browse at the markets or even order tailored African clothing.
Optional tours include a trip to the Pink Lake, which gets its color from
salt deposits. Another option is to travel to neighboring Gambia to visit
the village made famous by Alex Haley's novel: "Roots". |
 |
In the Gambia, you'll spend a
night, where you can take a city tour and visit markets. Or you can hire
a car & guide in Senegal to explore villages or visit the nature parks,
famous for their diverse bird life and other animals. Or relax on the beach
where you can watch fishermen bring in the catch. |

Senegal is affordable and
enriching. If you can visit only one country in Africa, make it Senegal!
